VOLLMILCH – The Beard as Signifier
25 October 2012 Vernissage
26 October 2012 Performance
The beard may be interpreted both as a masking of nakedness and as the signal of a no-nonsense back-to-nature attitude. Its ideal typical naturalness is in contrast to its fashion-dictated trendiness. Here we see social connotations and gender based constructions at play – from a tongue-in-cheek porn walrus moustache to a ‘queer’ full set. Works by Claude Cahoun, General Idea, Adrian Piper, Tobaron Waxman and others.
Curator: Thomas Edlinger
Opening: Thursday, 25. October 2012, 7 pm (together with the exhibition opening THE MALE NUDE)
Lentos Museum, Linz, Austria.

Letter from the 4th son.
XIX International AIDS Conference, Washington DC USA
My uncle, Dr. Benny Waxman, died in 1989 from AIDS. At our final visit, I longed to come out to him, but didn’t have the words. I have since then tried to find, posthumously, some mentorship from him through his deeds or people who knew him.
I will be at the historic AIDS conference, hoping that by some rare chance I could meet someone who knew him. The project has shifted from research-based to performance intervention: I have a designed a t-shirt aesthetically referencing the Gran Fury font from ACTUP branding, with images of Benny Waxman’s face on it. Even if I don’t encounter someone from his synagogue, a lover, a friend, a colleague, or a patient, “Letter from the 4th son” is an open gesture seeking gay male mentorship from the generations lost to AIDS.
